Packed up and left Snug to begin our journey back towards the north of the state. We'd had nearly 3 weeks in the south east of Tassie and enjoyed it all! Our destination today was Oatlands, around 106 km's. This involved driving back through Hobart which is a pretty easy thing to do! North of Hobart we had a morning tea stop in a historic town called Kempton. Plenty of quaint buildings along the main street. We stopped alongside an old blue church with a rusting steam engine out front.
It was just another 60 km's to Oatlands, which is just off the main road between Hobart and Launceston. Oatlands has Australia's largest collection of Georgian buildings and it's main street was lined with them! The other attraction in town is the old Mill, Callington Mill. Only two years ago the derelict shell of the mill was fully restored. It cost over $2 million and involved bringing out experts from the UK to help. It is now an operational flour mill and sells its flours to the public and many bakeries and grocers in Tasmania. The grounds of the mill include the owners cottage, millers cottage and grainary.
We had a guided tour of the windmill, which involved doning hard hats for the climb up 5 steep stair cases to the top. The vanes of the mill spun past as we peered out the windows! Got a detailed explanation of how it all works. We could not take cameras or anything else electronic into the mill as flour apparently is quite explosive! Watch out in the kitchen people!
We got to try some scones made with the mill flour at the end of the tour which was nice. We then had a walk around the grounds, gardens and then up and down the main street of this attractive old town.
Just behind the mill, by Lake Dulverton is a free camp area. We joined several other motorhomes, campers and caravans and set ourselves up for the night. Tomorrow we are back to our initial itinerary, skipping the freecamp at Fingal and heading straight to Scamander on the north west coast to begin our final week in Tasmania.
