St Helens, just 15 minutes up the road was where we set off for mid morning. Wandered around the township - the town itself is nothing to get excited about. It is the main town on the east coast, so it was the place to stock up on some supplies, fuel etc. Walked along the waterfront - there's a fishing fleet at the jetties. We also found the Paddle Wheeler which serves fish n chips and other sea food. They do gluten free, so we decided to ditch our crackers and spread and go for fish and chips!
After lunch we drove around the other side of Georges Bay to St Helens Point. At our first stop we went for a short walk down a sandy track to some rocks overlooking an aqua sea - even the overcast weather did not completely detract from the colours! As we sat on a large rock and took it all in, we spotted a huge stingray just below us - we could make out his tail, body and bulging eyes, plus he moved around a lot, unlike the rocks nearby! This was quite an unexpected suprise.
Our second stop saw us undertaking another short walk, up a path to St Helens Light, a rather unttractive shipping beacon. Fortunately the view made up for it, looking south along the coast with the vast expanse of the Peron Sand Dunes not far away. They looked inviting, so that was our third stop!
We had a great time leaping off the top of a dune, rolling down, running... even the walk back up was kind of fun! It was a another wonderful experience that we all enjoyed.
Tomorrow the plan is to go and visit what has been voted the 2nd best beach in the world, the Bay of Fires, just north of St Helens...
