January 11th
This morning we played on the beach opposite the caravan park - the location is simply amazing. We have this large stretch of beach right at our doorstep. Today was a little milder and was great for beach play and a little paddling in the cold water!
The afternoon involved an adventure we'd all been looking forward to and was one of the expected whole holiday highlights - a three hour trip with Pennicott's Wilderness Cruises... and it did not disappoint!
We were issued with spray jackets which were essential, not from any rain, but from a lot of salty spray! We all looked resplendent in these!
The boat was able to manouvre right into some sea caves, with the cliffs soaring nearly 300 metres about us.
This is Fluted Cape - the colour of the water was a splendid aqua, which contrasted with the rich blue of the sky!
We cruised along the eastern side of South Bruny Island, coming in close regularly.
At one point we sped between the cliffs and The Monument, a sea stack rising dramatically from the ocean!
The 'Breathing Rock' was amazing - it literally sounded like heavy breathing as water was sucked in and then exhaled with tremendous force!
Another of the dramatic caves:
We officially left the Tasman Sea and entered the Great Southern Ocean!
Rounding 'The Friars' we saw a colony of Australian Fur Seals frolicking in the water as well as basking on the rocks! Smelly, cute, amazing! There were hundreds of them.
On trip back to Adventure Bay we encountered a feeding frenzy of Short Tailed Shearwater birds - thousands of them. Apparently they travel some 30,000 km in their annual migrations! There were some amazingly graceful albertross's amongst them too. Off course what feeding frenzy would not attract everyone's favourite animal, the dolphin? We saw a small number of these as well...
This trip was an amazing adventure! Yes, it was a holiday highlight!
Looking great in orange!! :-)
