Saturday 5th January
It had cooled down overnight and today's weather was due to be considerably cooler - in the mid to high 20's. We awoke to news that much of the Tasman Peninsula was well alight and there had been significant damage overnight. Dunalley, where we had been staying just a couple of nights ago had been decimated according to news reports. We were very glad we were one step ahead of this firestorm, but were thinking about those that were caught up in it.
Saturday in Hobart is the day for the Salamanca Markets, so that is where we headed. Found a car park not too far away and wandered around the waterfront and the Markets. The markets were very busy and we did not spend long there. Gemma got a new sun hat and spent some of her Christmas money on some beads and a nice wooden bracelet made from different Tasmanian wood. The boys bought a couple of cars with some of their Christmas money.
As we were walking back along the waterfront, the boat we'd done the Port Arthur cruise on docked, having evacuated a lot of people from Port Arthur and Nubeena. They had to leave their homes, campsites, vehicles etc behind.
