Scorcher in Hobart

January 4th

A forcast scorcher of a day - 39 degrees, but it actually got to 42 which is unheard of in Hobart!  We thought we'd go up Mt Wellington as it was meant to be 10 degrees cooler up there, but it was closed to all traffic because of the extreme weather conditions.  So we had a quick stop at the Cascade Brewery - Jeanette wanted to stock up on Cascade Ice Cream Topping, not beer!  You cannot  buy it in Vic anymore, but we all love it.  Problem was, it was dearer at the visitors centre than in local supermarkets, so we did not buy any.

Next we went across town to Cadbury - these days you cannot do a factory tour, the OH&S and the Fun Police put a stop to this great experience a few years ago.  Instead we visited the shop and museum area.  Stocked up on a few essential supplies - this was a lot cheaper than retail.

Spent the rest of the afternoon in the air conditioned caravan - although it was still quite warm inside, but a few degrees cooler than outside.  After dinner we went to nearby Seven Mile Beach and cooled off paddling in the water,  A nice long beach, with kid friendly access to the water.  Across the harbour was smokey and as night fell we could see literally dozens of fires roaring.  It did not look like it was going to be a good night on the Tasman Peninsula.  Fortunately we'd left that area the day before.

The sun set behind the beach, with smoke haze all around us.
