This family adventure was to be little different to our ‘normal’
holiday. The caravan was staying at home… the car was staying at home. This
trip would involve trains, buses and ferries… and of course the cheapest of
transport option… feet.
Today we got ourselves a head start – tomorrow the real
adventure would begin. Today we caught the suburban train into Melbourne’s CBD –
getting off at Southern Cross Station, with each of the five of us pulling a
wheeled suitcase and with a small back pack upon our backs. Monday morning we
were booked to board the XPT train for Sydney. Departure time 8:30am. Because
it’s about an hour into the city we did not fancy a really early start tomorrow
morning. So we had booked an apartment just a few minutes’ walk from Southern
Cross Station – at Quest on William. So that is where we found ourselves early
afternoon. The apartment was very nice, two bedrooms, living area and small
kitchen. No views to speak of, just an old bluestone wall and a bland looking
alleyway. It didn’t matter, it was great inside.
One of the things I like about cities is seeing the contrast of old and new, such as this little bluestone church in contrast to the steel and glass mega-structures that dominate the city skyline.
We dropped off our luggage and spent a couple of hours being
tourists in our home city. A great way to explore a place is to search out
local Geocaches – these often take you to unusual little places you’d never
discover or know about. We found some on busy streets, behind the station, near
Etihad Stadium and down some quite little laneways. One laneway which was
non-descript actually had the façade of an old hat shop… looking rather in need
of some TLC now though.
We bought enough food at a supermarket to make dinner and
have breakfast in the morning, then spent the rest of the evening in the apartment.
