Decided to meander slowly to Lakes Entrance for our autumn
holiday – by free camping at Heyfield for a night on the way.
Hats off to the good people of Heyfield – they’ve turned a
local park into a free-camp. It’s a great way for smaller towns to get tourists
to spend some cash and support local economies. We happily made a donation for
the overnight stay and did a little shopping in town, as well as found all of
the local geocaches.
The next morning, with time on our hands we went for another
walk into town, visited the bakery before heading to nearby Maffra where we
visited the Gippsland Car Collection. Housed in a character filled old
warehouse, the cars on display change every 4 months. At the moment, it’s
Chryslers on display. It made me feel old, seeing cars from the 1970’s that my
parents owned in a museum!
After a lunch stop in Bairnsdale, we arrived in Lakes
Entrance about 2:30 pm. Lakes must have more caravan parks than any other town
in the country – there must be close to twenty of them! Most are quite small
though. We had chosen Koonwarra Family Caravan Park. The reasons for this
choice were varied but included it had a pool, good reviews and wasn’t the most
expensive one in town. It was also on the Esplanade, across the road from the
water.
All set up, we went for a wander along The Esplanade and
enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells… which always includes subtle and not so
subtle smells of the fishing fleet!
Lakes Entrance is a place we’d been to a few times, but not since the
kids were much younger, so it was all new to them.
We walked across the footbridge – opened in 2006 but already
scheduled for major refurbishment! Set eyes on the surf of the Ninety Mile
Beach.
Enjoyed dinner at the caravan and had a chat about all
things we want to do over the next nine days that we are in town…
